Extreme Weather: Typhoon Phanfone

Looks like we’ll be in for a wild weekend/start of the week next week, as Typhoon Phanfone storms its way towards landfall on main-island Honshu on Monday.

Typhoons typically weaken before they reach Tokyo, resulting in heavy rain and sometimes strong wind but lacking the sturm und drang typhoons have further out in the Pacific and even in southern Japan. Every once in a while, however, Tokyo takes one head-on, so to speak. Still too early to tell what Tokyo’s experience of Phanfone will be, but this typhoon is starting to show up on the weather radar of jaded Tokyoites.
